What's Happening

Dear Readers,

Announcement: The Participant Observer's monthly features (Recipes, Books, International CD's) are taking their annual winter break, but they will come roaring back in the new year!

Perhaps the biggest event happening in the next week is the 67th Annual Las Posadas in Old Town, taking place on Saturday.  Also on Saturday, the Persian Cultural Center will host their annual Yalda Night celebration. Next Thursday at Del Mar Highlands Town Center, there will be a Hanukkah Menorah Lighting.

Music and dance events include Golden State Ballet's The Nutcracker, which gets underway tonight at the Civic Theatre. Saturday concerts include Zambomba Flamenca at the Turquoise, Hot Pstromi at Carlsbad City Library, and Christmas in Mexico at the UCSD Epstein Family Amphitheater. On Sunday, Sädesärla with Christopher Adler and  Batya MacAdam-Somer will perform at Mission Trails Church.

Other notable events include the Kinfolk Holiday Market at the City of Hope International Church on Saturday, a Fundraiser for Jamaica at The Holding Company on Sunday, the Weihnachtsmarkt Christmas Market at the German American Society in El Cajon (also on Sunday), and a screening of the classic Buñuel film Viridiana at the Digital Gym on Tuesday.

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular we are seeking our reader's help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreaciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

In celebration of Native American Month, our Recipe of the Month is for Manoomin with Berries and Nuts, a traditional Ojibwe wild rice dish that’s easy to prepare and offers a very unique mix of earthy, nutty, and subtly sweet flavors.

CD of the Month

This Month's Music Selection if for Georgia - Sacred & Secular Vocal Polyphony by Ensemble Basiani. Ensemble Basiani is a renowned Georgianfolk singing group, established in 2000, that performs the country's ancient polyphonic vocal traditions. Vocal polyphony is the simultaneous singing of two or more independent melodic lines, creating rich harmonies through interwoven human voices rather than instrumental accompaniment.

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is Deacon King Kong by James McBride. This widely acclaimed and award-winning novel is this year’s One Book, One San Diego selection, and we’re proud to serve as a community partner for this annual initiative. The book brims with humor, poignancy, and sharp social insight, and McBride’s masterful use of vernacular speech makes every character leap vividly off the page. Above all, the novel shines for the deep humanity McBride discovers in the most unexpected people and places.
